John Locke and Demosthenes
John Locke was a famous English Philosopher and physician, he has inspired many famous speakers. He was a moderator. He started a democracy instead of a Monarchy. He thought we're born without thoughts but learn them through experiences. He thought that balance must be struck between individual rights and what is best for the greater good.
Demosthenes was a Greek statesmen and orator. He was the Radical who opposed the rule of Athens by Macedonia.
Give a summary of each (2-3 sent) and describe how they are related to Valentine and Peter (2-3 sent). Peter would like to expand the Warsaw Pact which is anti Russia. This is similar to the Cold War in which nothing really happened and there was no true battle. This is similar to Peter and Valentine as they use the nets as a use of persuasion, where they are not really fighting but they are making damage. Peter does not believe that Demosthenes (Valentine) will win over the public favor but he underestimates the fear of the people for the Russians. It is ironic though the roles that Peter and Valentine take, Valentine is a very compassionate character and she is completely against what she is writing (breaking Warsaw Pact and starting war with Russia), whereas Peter's role is being Locke who is against Demosthenes but in actual fact he is very much on Demosthenes side. Peter is supposed to be the ruler of fear, since he was born he has always been able to manipulate peoples fear, but another ironic point is that in the book he underestimates the fear the people have for the Russians.
Summarize Peter and Valentine's position that they take on the nets.
What role does fear play into how successful Valentine and Peter are?
